Rick Warren Says Women Should Stay in Abusive Marriages
Saddleback says maybe you should get some counseling if you’re getting abused, and if you’re getting “physically abused” you should get a “temporary separation”, but they’re isn’t having any of that namby pamby bitch got slapped and didn’t like it; a woman’s got to get beat to get a break:
Don’t worry, if you’re in an abusive relationship you can still honor god’s law - just fuck someone else! Then you can get one of those Rick-Warren-approved adultery divorces. Correction: Associated baptist Press has released a correction that replaces the article this post drew it’s quotes from:
So there you go - it was really Warren’s “Teaching Pastor” that made the comments. While it was not Warren who made the remarks I feel secure in laying the responsibility for them at Warren’s feet - his church, his rules. |

Rick Warren’s Saddleback church has a new marriage counseling program called “it’s just his way”, a delightful program in which battered women get told that god hates divorce, too fucking bad for you. The bible says that a woman can only get a divorce if one partner likes to bang other people or abandons their partner like a teen mother’s love child. They’re pretty broken up about it too:

The problem with this is he is right, they should stay and should hold to bible and the god they claim to believe in. Surely if he is a just all knowing god that loves his children all abused women have to do is love him back in order for him to step in and save them. Anyone who professes they believe should be held accountable to the words in the book. There would be far fewer Christians if they didn’t get to pick and choose which rules they wanted to accept and which they would cast aside as simple inconveniences of modern life.

Obviously, Brad, you have never been abused. AND you don’t live in the real world. What planet are you from? Mars? What advice are you giving to your own defenseless daughter? “Black eyes and broken bones are only “inconveniences of modern life”, dear. Take it like a man!” “And when the house is on fire, be sure to stay by the sink so you can refill your water pistol.”

brad, are you aware many women stay in/return to these abusive relationships BECAUSE of that very reason? “BUT I LOVE HIM!”. it’s NOT enough, to say otherwise is either incredibly cold-hearted or ignorant. take your pick.
also, do you refrain from eating shell fish or pork? do you make animal sacrifices to the lord? do you really believe that homosexuals or children who say naughty things to their parents should be put to death? or that anyone with physical defects, such as cleft palate or a broken arm, approaching the alter offends your god?
just curious because, as i’m sure you know, all of these things are in your holy text. but i doubt many christians follow these rules, am i right? and please don’t tell me that christ’s death nullified these rules, because all that is still in your holy text, and all christians should be accountable to the words in the book, right? plus, guys still love to cite that little “DEATH TO HOMOS” bit. a wonderful example of the picking and choosing you’re so adamantly against.

I think he was trying to say that if people actually followed the bible rather than picking and choosing more people would realize how horrifying it is and there would be fewer Christians. I don’t think he was trying to marginalize domestic violence. I think he was trying to illustrate the absurdity of that sort of belief, it was just a bit too deadpan for the internet…

Since most of you have me pegged as some christian nut job, let me inform you how wrong you are. I may be a bit crazy, but a christian I am not. I just happen to agree with the fundamentalists about what is said in the bible. I am not saying the bible is right only agreement with what the words on the page are. You can’t deny that simply because you don’t want to believe in their god. Go read it for yourselves if you haven’t. We need to accept that truth and challenge the moderate christian belief that they can tranform christianity into a kinder gentler religion simply because they would rather ingore the distasteful parts than accept the whole thing is a crock of shit.
@Susanweb I do live in the real world and for the record am very familiar with abuse. What advice will I be giving my daughter as she grows? That is simple, religion is bullshit and those that cling to it deserve everything that comes with it. Black eyes and broken bones are not inconveniences of modern life, they are the inconveniences you must put up with if you believe what they bible says about marriage. Too many people try and forget about or ignore the facts when they rewrite the religion to suit their own needs.
@stringstheory you are missing the point. If they stay in the relationships because they are so caught up in their superstitous beliefs, then yes they do deserve what they get. I don’t feel sorry for the god squad when they look to god for saving and still get the crap beat out of them. It is their faith in superstition that has got them into this situation. What is worse when you take them out of the situation they come to the conclusion that it was the work of the lord that brought about their salvation. I say leave them to be abused until they figure out god either doesn’t exist or isn’t on their side. I feel for the children who are left in these relationships, I was one of them, but if we pull them out and stick them with more believers the only thing we do is perpetuate the notion that god saves the innocent. I was lucky enough to have figured out there was no god or he didn’t give a damn about me by the time I was removed, otherwise I would have bought the crap my foster parents were telling me about how God was trying my faith and as a reward sent me to them.
Yeah it is cold hearted thing to say, but it still needs to be said.
@Chris Thank you. You get it. Religion is not only absurd, it is destructive and hurtful to a growing society. It is time those of us who don’t believe work to show religion for what it is, not what revisionists want people to believe it is.
